Evaluation of Building Community Capacity and Addressing Policy Issues

Community organizations serving persons with disabilities must work together to develop an effective advocacy strategy

Summary

The purpose of this project was to evaluate the “Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped” (AISH) public policy roundtable, facilitated by the Developmental Disabilities Resource Center (DDRC). DDRC worked with a cross-sectoral group of agencies interested in public policy concerning the severely handicapped. They developed a community model for policy engagement with the help of the United Way of Calgary. Their goal was to build capacity and knowledge within the voluntary sector, in order to create an effective platform to make policy recommendations based on the needs of the disabled community and the organizations supporting that community. This project allowed for an external analysis of the processes and policies of the AISH Public Policy Roundtable.
