Speakers

Ian Brodie is a Professor in the Department of Political Science and a Fellow at the Centre for Military, Security and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary. He is also Program Director at the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, a Fellow of the Halifax International Security Forum, and Chair of the Research Committee at the Institute for Research on Public Policy. Professor Brodie was Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister of Canada from 2006 to 2008. Prior to that, he worked as Executive Director of the Conservative Party of Canada and as Chief of Staff to the Opposition Leader.

Emilie Nicolas is a columnist with Le Devoir and the Montreal Gazette, and a frequent media commentator, analyst, public speaker, educator, and consultant on public policy, equity, human rights, international cooperation, race and gender issues. She is a regular contributor to CBC’s Power & Politics and Let’s Go as well as CTV’s PowerPlay, and has been published in several journals, magazines and newspapers, both in French and English. She won the Quebec’s cultural magazine (SODEP) 2020 Excellence Award for Best Essay, for a piece in Revue Liberté.

Alasdair Roberts is a Professor of public policy at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He writes extensively on problems of governance, law and public policy. His latest book, The Adaptable Country: How Canada Can Survive the Twenty-First Century will be available in September 2024. In 2022, he received the Riggs Award for Lifetime Achievement in International and Comparative Public Administration. In 2014 he received the Grace-Pépin Access to Information Award for his research on open government. From 2009 to 2017, he was co-editor of the journal Governance. He serves on the editorial boards of several other journals in the field of public administration.

Paul Wells is one of Canada’s leading political journalists. He has spent more than 25 years on Parliament Hill, covering eight federal elections, four prime ministers, and a big piece of Canada’s history. He was the lead political writer at Maclean’s magazine. He has also written for the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail and The National Post. He has worked extensively overseas, including in Europe, the United States and Afghanistan. Paul Wells speaks in both official languages on all matters of the day, from the nation’s position in the global economy, to the inside scoop on what’s really happening inside the Parliament buildings and beyond.
